Do we have a calling — or just a job?

Do we have a calling — or just a job?

A calling is when we create from inspiration, and material reward comes as a consequence.

A job is when we create driven solely by a specific material goal.

The search for one’s calling — often referred to as “life purpose” — has become a popular topic, as more and more people are growing tired of creating from goals rather than inspiration.

At the same time, the idea of life purpose can feel too serious and overwhelming, which leaves many people blocked by its perceived importance — and as a result, they never discover their path.

We tend to have very high expectations when imagining our contribution to life and to others — and because of that, we often end up doing nothing.

On the other hand, some people remember even the smallest moment of our attention for the rest of their lives — and we never even find out.

We don’t realize that, at some point, we may have added the “cherry on top” of someone’s life, simply because we considered our own gesture too small — while our expectations were far greater than what we actually gave.

In my own search for what I want to do through my private practice — something I would truly enjoy — I received a request from someone I will call a client, although, thanks to our relationship, I see them more as a business partner — to organize an online training for shopping mall managers in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Why didn’t that idea occur to me earlier, when it was such a natural extension of my experience?

Because I gave too much weight to the idea of my life purpose.

Although I often had the role of an “offline” mentor throughout my career, when I started working on materials for the online training, I noticed an internal pressure — questioning whether I would deliver value at the level I expected from myself.

However, over the past two months, the openness and authenticity of the people I’ve been working with have created a beautiful mirror for me — one I truly enjoy — and through which I’ve realized that when you create from inspiration, it is enough just to exist — and you are already contributing.

Everything you share beyond that — your knowledge and experience — is simply the cherry on top of our shared existence.
